| If this is a new fresh image, you may delete the only layer present in the file and add a new layer without any background color.
Then you can colorize as you want the new layer, that represents the background, because there is only one layer.
In photoshop, due to layers, you don't really have a background. The only background could be the lowest layer, but that's it ...

| Try opening the image in fireworks, if you have it, and follow the instructions i gave you. And then preview image and export as png 8 with index transparency [Edit]: *FACEPALM!* This noob forgot that index transparency only works with mozzila and opera. Try alpha transparency... [Edit]: Argh! that means my Avatar and sig(s) look uglified. Must fix that when i get home. I use Mozzila so all this time it' gone unnoticed by me... … | |

| -adobe photoshop- while create a new page, chose transparent backround. Unless, simply delete the background layer. | |

| No. Right click in the backround layer. (usually in the left of the monitor) Delete layer. | |

| Ah i see what you are trying to do. Transparencies. Okay. First you have to make the 'background' image that you are working on layer 0, double click on the layer and it will turn into layer 0.
Then, erase the background and save as a .png file.
